The Cloud Type product, developed by the Satellite Application Facility to support to nowcasting and very short-range forecasting (SAFNWC) of EUMETSAT and based on Météosat-8/SEVIRI, identifies cloud categories, and especially low and very low clouds which are first estimates of areas where fog is likely to occur. This cloud type is combined with precipitation information from radar data and with hourly diagnostic analyses of 2-metre relative humidity and 10-metre wind to elaborate an hourly analysis of fog probability. This analysis provides four levels of fog probability with a 3-kilometre horizontal resolution: No risk, low-level risk, medium-level risk and high-level risk. An evaluation of such fog probability analyses versus a one-year set of French hourly SYNOP reports shows encouraging results (potential of detection = 0.73 for low and medium and high-level risks), even if false alarm ratios remain high. Most of the non-detections occur at twilight and are due to satellite non-detections. Eventually, we show case studies that clearly illustrate the high potential of the method.  相似文献

An effective and accurate technique for the numerical solution of 2-D electromagnetic scattering problems with 3-D sources is presented. This solution introduces a set of the usual boundary integral equations and uses a scalar Green's function. In this scalar version, the unknowns of the problem are the boundary values of the longitudinal fields and their normal derivatives in the Fourier domain. A generalization of the usual boundary integral formulation enables us to handle a large class of models composed of piecewise homogeneous domains, including contiguous domains, multiply-connected domains and unbounded domains. This formulation involves the solution of a system of linear equations, and results in a significant saving in computation time in comparison with other rigorous methods.
  The requirements for the numerical implementation of this solution are described in detail. Numerical tests were carried out using the important example of electromagnetic tomography. The specific symmetry properties of the response function in this case are illustrated. Numerical accuracy is verified over a large frequency range, up to 1  MHz.  相似文献

It was known that deep within numbers and binary data from simulations of geophysical convective flows resided various patterns. Two models of convective fluid flows were being considered. One was a model of two-dimensional (768 × 256) air convection with finite Prandtl number of one and Rayleigh number of 108−1010, and another was a model of three-dimensional (up to 120 × 120 × 90) mantle convection with infinite Prandtl number and Rayleigh number of 106−108. Clearly, phenomena existed which superceded each individual dimensionless computer model to provide a piece of information regarding actual fluid flows. The problem was how to find, prove, and communicate these patterns and phenomena for convection simulations with gigabytes of data. In a search for such an analytical and communicative tool, the alternative of visualization was considered. The need for visualization was recognized and discussed. Then, utilizing both two- and three-dimensional models of high Rayleigh number convection, basic techniques of style and content were developed. Applications of the visualization techniques were designed utilizing IBM’s Data Explorer in order to create communicative images and movies, and after the applications, the problems of data storage and transfer became apparent. Throughout the process though, it became clear how important the language of vision actually could be in the geophysics community. In a field in which words such as plumes and internal waves have in ways replaced mathematics as the basic language for science, there is a need for another resource, another language-the visualization of convective fluid flows.  相似文献

A previously unpublished record of lake levels from Lake Naivasha, Kenya from 1880 to 1976 has been analysed and shows little similarity to the level record from nearby Lake Victoria. Level changes from year to year of the two lakes show no significant correlation (at 5%) and spectral analysis of the two records shows no common significant peaks. Both lakes show significant correlations between their level changes and the strength of the North Atlantic winter circulation, with the correlation coefficients in opposing directions indicating important, but different, large scale climatic links.Lake Naivasha's major level increases occur during May and September. Lake Victoria's level increases mainly in May with a small December increase. East African rainfall is generally during April and November, corresponding with Lake Victoria's changes. Rainfall records from Kenyan highland areas, however, show an August rainfall peak and little rainfall in November. Rainfall amounts from Equator, a highland meteorological station, for July, August and September are highly correlated (at 1% significance level) with the change in Naivasha's level during September. Winds at the highland stations are westerly during August while the lower level stations experience the drier S.E. Trades. The level changes of Lake Naivasha indicate changes in the extent of the penetration of moist air from West Africa between the Trade winds and the 200 mb easterly jet.  相似文献

Preliminary results of a multi-narrow beam survey of the Hellenic trench system, in the Eastern Mediterranean, are presented. The southwestern Ionian branch is divided in small basins, partly filled with Pleistocene sediments. The morphology suggests that the basins are deformed by a compressional stress acting roughly perpendicularly to the trench along N50°E. This direction is the direction of the regional slip vector of the shallow thrust-type earthquakes. The structure of the southeastern Pliny-Strabo branch is quite different. Narrow en-e´chelon slots, oriented N40°E, have been mapped within the main troughs oriented N60°E. The regional earthquake slip vector is also oriented along N40°E. We conclude that the Hellenic trench system is an active subduction system, dominated by thrust along the Ionian branch and by transform motion along the Pliny-Strabo branch.  相似文献

A new detailed aeromagnetic survey of the Republic of Djibouti and surrounding area reveals a wealth of new information which can be correlated with other data, in particular geologic and tectonic maps. Oceanic magnetic anomalies are identified from the Gulf of Aden westward to the Ghoubbet-Asal rift in Afar. Identification of the anomalies, together with a reinterpretation of earlier magnetic profiles, indicates that rifting started earlier in the east and provides clear evidence for the westward propagation of a crack through the lithosphere at an approximate velocity of 3 cm y?1. The crack tip is now thought to lie somewhere close to lake Asal and should continue its motion further to the northwest. Some first consequences of this non-rigid model of plate opening are discussed and independent support from a number of sources is obtained.  相似文献

Summary An exploration of the electrical properties of the atmosphere on and above the island of Hawaii, as indicated by a portable corona current unit, is described. A 30 foot telescopic mast having a radioactive probe mounted on an insulated bushing and connected by shielded cable to a sensitive microammeter was used. Corona currents were measured at a number of geographic locations ranging from sea level under conditions of heavy surf to the 10,000 foot level on Mauna Kea several thousand feet above the exchange layer, and over the land and ocean in a light plane. Observations were made under clear, cloudy and rainy conditions. Fair weather and cloudy conditions gave currents from air to earth of positive sign. With warm rain falling the currents had a negative sign and increased in value with intensity of precipitation. In several instances indications of incipient discharges similar to that observed in mild lightningstorms were noted.The island of Hawaii has many desirable features to recommend it for an extensive research program in atmospheric electricity. A simple and inexpensive approach to inaugurating such a program is suggested.  相似文献

Summary This paper investigates tropical-extratropical interactions over the northwestern Pacific Ocean that involve tropical cyclones and subtropical jet streaks. Another aspect of this study is to examine the relation between 6–25 day convective variability and tropical cyclones. This investigation is conducted for the fall and early winter season, with a focus on the months, October through December (OND). In addition to outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) data, we use 10 years (1985–1994) of WCRP/TOGA archive II analyses produced by ECMWF to compute equivalent temperature, e , precipitable water, W, and kinematic and kinetic energy transfer variables. These variables are composited for two classes of tropical cyclones, recurving cyclones (RCs) and non-recurving cyclones (NCRs), in order to examine the influence of tropical cyclones and baroclinic processes on changes in the jet streak intensity.We found that RCs interacted with extratropical regions during all composite days. A strong baroclinic zone developed throughout the troposphere on the north side of the composite cyclone as it propagated poleward. Between the day of recurvature, DR, and the day after recurvature, DR+1, the main band of convection shifted from the RC to a frontal band within the baroclinic zone indicating a transformation of the tropical cyclone into an extratropical one. An eastward propagating jet streak at 200 hPa, located north of the RC and in the vicinity of the baroclinic zone, increased its speed from 57 ms–1 to 79 ms–1 on DR+1. Although we could not measure the role of baroclinic processes in this regard, we were able to infer that upper-level outflow from the RC did supply momentum and energy to the jet streak.Whereas we expected tropical-extratropical interactions for the RCs, we also found evidence that NRCs that stay south of 20° N throughout their lifetime and that dissipate over Indo-China have an influence on the subtropical jet by their upper-level outflow, especially in the late OND season. The tropical (i.e., momentum) forcing did appear to cause increases in the speed of the jet after the composited storm crossed the Phillippines on the fourth day of its life cycle, D4. Concurrently, a baroclinic zone developed along the coast of southern China by about D4, but it was confined to the lower troposphere.Finally, our spectral analysis investigations for the northwestern Pacific showed significant peaks at 6–10 days and 15–20 days from late September to early December. The first peak is well known and is associated with typhoon activity. In several of the investigated autumn seasons (1987, 1989, 1992, and 1993), the second peak was clearly related to the recurrence interval of northwestern Pacific tropical cyclones. This result is in accordance with the findings of Hartmann et al. (1992). For some years of the investigation period (1985, 1986, and 1988), however, our results showed that westward propagating convective disturbances that fail to reach tropical depression strength also contribute to the power in the 15–25 day band, whereas in a few years (1990 and 1991), no OLR peak between 15 and 20 days could be found at all. Therefore, it appears that further work needs to be done with regard to the relationship between convective systems and their accompanying relationships on time scales ranging between 10 and 25 days.With 15 Figures  相似文献
